Rising as the highest peak in the area, Hawksbill offers hikers and outdoor enthusiasts an accessible yet invigorating climb that culminates in sweeping panoramas extending over jagged cliffs, dense forests, and distant ridges. This mountain stands out not only because of its elevation but also due to its distinctive rock formations that hint at the geological forces shaping the region. Its name is drawn from the silhouette of the peak, resembling the hooked beak of a hawk against the sky.

The trails leading to Hawksbill's summit move through sections of Pisgah National Forest, where visitors encounter native flora such as mountain laurels and rhododendrons, which flourish in the cool, moist environment. Awesome reward for a steep hike. Hike is relatively short (~45min -1hr for most on way up) but is definitely grueling near the top as It gets pretty steep. The last 15 mins of the drive to the trailhead is on gravel, I made it in a sedan and didn't scrape. You will need to take it slow and watch for large rocks and divots.

Great hike and vista. The dirt road in is rough and slow going. It’s worth the effort if the weather cooperates. The hike up Hawks is strenuous, but short. If you want to hike further, go south along the ridge line for views of the gorge, Shortoff, and Lake James.
