Hawksbill Mountain: A Vista Worth the Climb

This trail has recently reopened. The road leading to the trailhead is just about as bumpy and unsuitable for small, low riding vehicles as ever, but you can tell a lot of work has been put into clearing the debris from hurricane Helene. Hundreds of trees down and visible places where landslides occurred on the drive in. Fortunately, the trail to Hawksbill was in good condition, albeit a bit muddy and slick in places, and the 365 degree views at the top never fail to disappoint! There are a good bit of roots and moderate elevation gain along the way, but given that it's only a little over 2 miles roundtrip, it's not too difficult and the payoff is immense! Side note--the trail head leading to Sitting bear and Devils hole which you pass on the way in is still currently closed as of 12/31/24

Wow! Just wow! Once you reach the top the views are aw-inspiring😍 Like something you see in a movie. We took a couple breathers on the hick up so it took us about 45 minutes to hike. On the way down it took 30 minutes. We went during the winter Late December and it was cold. I wore thermals with 3 layers of clothes, ear muffs and sking glives😆. But I'm melanated and we saw many Caucasians who had on a long sleeve with just a lil jacket. They were bald head with no hat or hoodie. Take it how you want but it's the truth. The drive consisted of some narrow portions but nothing you can't handle if you're taking your time and being courteous of others. We had a 2 wheel/rear wheel drive and still was able to make the drive up and down. We were told you didn't have to worry too much about bears. And honestly we didn't see much of animal life besides a few birds.
