About This Adventure Destination

Discovering Eriskay: Isle of South Uist’s Hidden Gem

Eriskay, situated in the enchanting Outer Hebrides of Scotland, is a captivating destination that offers more than just scenic beauty. The island, a part of the Isle of South Uist, presents visitors with breathtaking white sand beaches, giving it a Caribbean-like allure, yet nestled in the cool Atlantic waters. The island is most famous for its stunning beach, which boasts powdery, white sand set against the vibrant blue ocean. The tranquility of Eriskay is punctuated by the occasional sound of waves and birds, making it an idyllic location for those seeking peace and solitude.

One remarkable geological feature is the island's composition of ancient Lewisian gneiss, one of the oldest rocks in the world, dating back over 3 billion years. This unique landscape is not only a photographer’s paradise but also a haven for wildlife, including seals and a variety of seabirds. Historically, Eriskay holds cultural significance with its links to the sinking of the SS Politician in 1941, which inspired the famous story “Whisky Galore.”

Eriskay offers an authentic Scottish island experience, where the simplicity of life and the raw beauty of nature come together seamlessly. Visitors often find solace in the island's charm, making it a stand-out destination for nature enthusiasts and history lovers alike.

Editorial Assessment

Love this little Island. The wild ponies and The politician pub with it's wonderful food and beer garden on the most amazing beach, makes it the perfect place for a quiet break away from the mad world.

I officially love this place obviously the rest of the islands are amazing too, but there is something about Eriskay, if you are on the Uists and the weather is bad, head downward they always seem to have it better, the beaches are stunning, there are otters short eared owls golden Eagle white tailed Eagle and lots more, and the have a pub! 'The Polly' as it is affectionately known serves amazing food and a good choice of beer oh and they have WiFi, if you are a vetran of the western Isles you will know the value!
