About This Adventure Destination

Natural Waterfall Gem in Puerto Rico’s Mountainous Maricao Region

Salto Curet is a stunning waterfall located near the lush mountain town of Maricao in Puerto Rico’s western region. This natural cascade spills over rocky cliffs into a refreshing pool below, surrounded by dense tropical forest and rugged terrain. Maricao’s cool mountain climate and rich biodiversity make Salto Curet a standout destination for visitors seeking a true wilderness experience. The waterfall itself drops from moderate height over volcanic rock formations typical of this part of Puerto Rico’s Cordillera Central mountain range, presenting a scenic combination of rushing water and textured stone.

The setting is largely untouched, with native flora such as ferns and tropical hardwoods lining the banks, creating a calming, green retreat. Local legends speak of the area’s natural springs and the importance of clean water to surrounding communities. Though it requires a bit of effort to reach, the payoff is an intimate encounter with a beautiful waterfall many tourists miss. Salto Curet offers an authentic outdoor experience, blending natural beauty with rugged adventure. It’s a special spot for visitors keen to witness one of Puerto Rico’s quieter, more pristine falls.

The waterfall’s main pool is perfect for a cooling dip on warm days, and the sounds of flowing water and forest life provide an immersive break from urban noise. Whether stopping by for a short visit or embarking on a longer hike through the surrounding hills, this site’s remote charm and natural appeal make it a memorable place to discover in Maricao.

Editorial Assessment

Salto Curet is a beautiful natural waterfall offering a rewarding outdoor experience for adventurous visitors. Its scenic volcanic rocks, clear plunge pool, and remote forest setting provide a unique destination in Puerto Rico’s mountainous region. While it is lesser-known and requires moderate physical effort to access, the authenticity and natural charm make it a memorable stop for nature lovers. It does not reach the highest level of iconic global landmarks due to limited worldwide recognition and accessibility challenges, but it stands out as a special regional outdoor destination.

Stunnning waterfall and swimming hole, we went in the afternoon and had the place to ourselves for an hour. Almost got stuck not having a 4x4 but if it doesn’t rain you should be ok. The hike is up along the river mouth for 10-30 min depending on your speed.
