August 2026. The Moremi Game Reserve was the essence of the African safari, the real one, far from mass tourism and immersed in pristine nature. Located in the heart of the Okavango Delta, this reserve offered us a unique landscape contrast: here the arid savannah meets the labyrinthine lagoons and waterways of the delta, creating an ecosystem of astonishing biodiversity. The quantity of wildlife we ​​encountered was impressive. In fact, our guide explained that Moremi is home to all the famous Big Five, thanks also to the recent and successful reintroduction of the rhinoceros, and is one of the best places ever to spot rare wild dogs, as well as huge herds of elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hippos, and giraffes. It is a true biological sanctuary, with hundreds of bird species populating the mopane forests and riverbanks. What most impressed us was the sheer sense of isolation. The 4x4 safaris departing at dawn, navigating sandy tracks and river crossings, allowed us to observe hippos and other aquatic wildlife from a close-up and peaceful perspective. Sleeping in the reserve's tented camps was a true adventure. Falling asleep in the African night, protected only by the canvas of our tent, while in the distance you could hear the roar of a lion or the cry of hippos in the canals, is a feeling that can only be understood if you experience it. Moremi was a primal experience that touched the depths of our souls.

Frankly, it didn't live up to expectations. Most of the marked roads were impassable (even for off-road vehicles), and there was no warning about this (neither from staff nor signs). The park wasn't maintained at all. We spent 12 hours trying to find a usable road, only to end up sleeping in the car as night fell. Aside from that, nothing exceptional (except for Third Bridge, which we couldn't reach...).

We spent 2 days driving through this age reserve. The road conditions were way better than we expected and in the southernmost parts we could encounter many different animals. Unfortunately, due to heavy rain falls earlier this year, most parts of the reserve were flooded and impossible to reach, including the famous Xakanaxa area. We were not happy with the fact that rangers didn’t know their own reserve and couldn’t give any reliable information about which streets are drivable, so we wasted a lot of time circling around finding many paths closed or impossible to pass.
