The Mount Elgon trek itself was amazing, with incredible scenery and a great route (Sipi-Piswa). Unfortunately, we experienced poor organization and a lack of transparency from the tour company. The main issue was that we paid for a 5-day trek that was effectively completed in 4 days, with only a very short walk on the final morning (30min). Rangers on the trail confirmed that this route is normally done in 4 days, making the extra day feel unnecessary (and the most expensive 30min hike we ever did). The logistics on the first day were poorly organized, when we made it to the entry the food wasn’t yet bought, causing us to reach the first camp just before dark. The sleeping bags provided were not suitable for the cold temperatures at higher altitude. Even with multiple wool layers and winter hiking gear, nights at the highest camp were very cold so I would bring my own sleeping bag if you camping at one of the high altitude camps. More concerning was that the porters had no sleeping bags at all despite temperatures around -5°C, which seemed unsafe and unacceptable. There was also a lack of transparency regarding guiding fees, and a refund was only issued after we pointed out the discrepancy. Overall, Mount Elgon is a fantastic destination, but the company’s organization, equipment standards, and communication need significant improvement.

Juma was an extremely amazing guide. He was very informed and patient with us. He related very well with us and the community as well. My highlights were the Sipi Falls hikes and the coffee tour. Highly recommended!

We had a fantastic experience hiking to the Mt Elgon summit with Juma and Massif Montane Expedition in June 2024. I would like to fully recommend his services. Juma arranged a super well-organized hike for my 2 teenagers and me to the Mt Elgon summit including 3 nights camping on the mountain. Everything was very clear, both as we were hiking and for the preparations before the hike. Apart from being very experienced and knowledgeable about the region, Juma especially did a good job paying attention to everyone’s level of fitness and endurance.
