This was a wondrous, serene, quiet place to take a late winter hike in! South of the famous Hocking Hills, Vinton Furnace State Forest feels a lot less commercialized. There are no souvenir and pizza shops and large amounts of tourists all around; it is like a vast sanctuary of woods— a real gift to anyone who wanders there. And wandering is exactly what I did. I parked my vehicle by some of the camping sites, which looked very appealing for a potential date in the future. There was a small bathroom there, but it was not maintained; needed new TP and sanitizer. For that, I dock off a star. Nevertheless, I headed into the woods and just roamed. I can even say it was a very prayerful experience, and the early March sunlight streamed through the trees, weaving its way to create that gentle, yellow glow across the forest floor. One could easily become lost in the woods! GPS on my phone still operated within the woods fortunately. It is hilly, and I discovered a pleasant, trickling stream (with some sand that one's foot could sink in very abruptly into! So be careful.). I discovered an old shovel that maybe has been around for over 100 years. It feels so untouched, as if one has time travelled into a century of old. This, then, brings one to the great sight: the centuries-old furnace! I have reviewed the furnace separately, for on Maps it is a distinct icon.
