About This Adventure Destination

Mahana Beach, located in the picturesque district of Kaʻū on Hawaii's Big Island, offers a unique coastal experience. This remarkable spot, also known as Papakōlea Beach, is famed for its green sand—a rare phenomenon attributed to the presence of the mineral olivine, eroded from the surrounding volcanic terrain. The beach is tucked below striking cliffs and is one of only four green sand beaches worldwide, making it a must-visit for nature enthusiasts.

Visitors are greeted with the sight of verdant slopes plunging into the turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean. This naturally secluded spot provides an unforgettable glimpse of Hawaii's dynamic geological history. The stark contrast of olive green sands against the deep blue sea creates a mesmerizing landscape, further enhanced by the rugged cliffs that flanked the shoreline. Witnessing this spectacular natural setting fosters a deeper appreciation for the island's volcanic origins.

The beach is also steeped in local culture, with connections to Hawaiian mythology adding an element of mystery and allure. Historically, this area has been revered by native Hawaiians, and visitors are encouraged to tread lightly and respect the land and its stories. The beach's unique features and cultural significance make it an authentically enriching experience in Hawaiian exploration.

Editorial Assessment

Mahana Beach is celebrated for its distinct green sand and volcanic landscape. Although not as accessible as some locations, its rarity and natural beauty make it a compelling destination.

Trail is super long beautiful tho tbh I would do the trail again but it was hard. theres a uncle that if you pay $15 he'll drive you there and back the beach itself is SUPER nice BUT not a place you can really swim or lounge around its a cliff not a real beach

Pay the $$ - $25 per person - for the villagers to drive you down to the Green Sand Beach. It will be worth it! You can hike it, but it is hot and rough and one can get lost in the deep ruts. Plus, you'll be exhausted on the one-hour hike back up to parking. Its worth the money. NOTE: Rental vehicles are not permitted to drive down to the beach Its that treacherous of a road.

Plan for an approximately 1-hour hike with good shoes, sunscreen, and a t-shirt. The place is magnificent! It's difficult to access for those with mobility issues. Locals can take you there in a pickup truck for $30 round trip or $20 return (which is what we did). Once there, the scenery is incredible, with huge waves!
