About This Adventure Destination

The Southside Junction Trail offers a unique mix of scenic beauty and historical immersion, making it a standout biking destination in the New River Gorge. Stretching 7 miles one way (14 miles round trip), this relatively flat rail-trail follows an old railroad grade along the New River, treating riders to spectacular river views, lush forests, and a glimpse into the Gorge’s industrial past.

Starting at the Cunard River Access Point, the trail quickly settles into a tranquil rhythm. The surface is a mix of crushed gravel and dirt, ideal for hybrid or mountain bikes. As you pedal, the sound of the river becomes your constant companion, its steady flow setting the pace for the ride. Along the way, remnants of the Gorge’s coal-mining history peek out from the undergrowth: rusted machinery, weathered trestles, and the occasional stone foundation, whispering stories of a bygone era.

The Southside Junction Trail is more than just a ride; it’s a chance to connect with the natural and cultural heartbeat of the Gorge. Wildlife sightings are common, from deer darting between the trees to herons fishing in the shallows. In the fall, the trail transforms into a tunnel of gold and crimson as the hardwoods blaze with color.

For those who love a destination, the ride reaches its turnaround point at the historic Thurmond Depot. This preserved train station offers a window into the Gorge’s past as a bustling railroad town. Riders can take a break, explore the depot, and imagine the clatter of trains echoing through the valley.

Whether you’re a history buff, a nature enthusiast, or simply looking for a peaceful, scenic ride, the Southside Junction Trail delivers. It’s the kind of trail that lets you slow down, breathe deeply, and take in the magic of the New River Gorge.

I have hiked this in the summer and winter. There are better views and the trail is easier to navigate in the winter months. The coke ovens, building foundations, and rail lines are amazing to see!
