About This Adventure Destination

Floating Gardens of Inle Lake, Shan State, Myanmar

Nestled in the heart of Myanmar’s Shan State, the Floating Gardens of Inle Lake are a mesmerizing spectacle of innovation and tradition. Inle Lake, surrounded by majestic mountains, spans an area of about 116 square kilometers. This aquatic oasis is home to a unique way of life, where floating gardens cultivate an array of crops, all anchored by bamboo poles. These gardens, buoyant and fertile, support the livelihoods of the Intha people who reside in traditional stilt houses.

What sets these gardens apart is their ingenious construction—layered from water hyacinth, mud, and other organic materials—creating floating islands that remain stable through seasonal changes. Visitors can observe farmers tending to tomatoes, beans, and cucumbers, all blossoming atop tranquil waters. The gardens are not only a testament to sustainable agriculture but also a cultural gem that illustrates the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature.

Moreover, the lake area is a vibrant mosaic of life, home to diverse flora and fauna, including rare bird species like the Jerdon's bush chat. Visitors are enchanted by the seamless commingling of vibrant market scenes with serene natural vistas. This floating agricultural paradise offers a window into a world where tradition thrives amidst nature’s bounty.

This is one of the most impressive parts of Inle Lake to see the floating gardens, small sheds in between, tomato plantations, farmers taking care of the gardens, transporting goods and enjoying the boat ride while navigating these narrow canals.

A unique and fascinating example of traditional farming, where locals grow vegetables and flowers on floating garden beds. It’s impressive to see how they maintain and harvest these crops on the water. Like everything on Inle Lake, it’s a one-of-a-kind experience that makes the visit truly special.
