About This Adventure Destination

Eternal Flame Falls: A Unique Natural Wonder

Eternal Flame Falls, located in Orchard Park, New York, offers visitors a rare sight: a waterfall with a natural flame that flickers behind its cascading waters. This remarkable natural attraction is a geological marvel, blending elements of fire and water in a harmonious display. The flame is sustained by natural gas seeping through cracks in the shale rock bed. What makes this destination particularly unique is the consistent presence of this small flame, even beneath the waterfall’s flowing streams. Such phenomena are rare, making it a curious highlight for geology enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

The waterfall is part of the Shale Creek Preserve, which falls within Chestnut Ridge Park. Its location in a tranquil forest setting offers a peaceful retreat without straying far from the bustling life of Orchard Park. The combination of the park’s serene trails and the enigmatic flame adds a layer of mystical allure to your visit. Visitors often report a sense of discovery when they first spot the flame, lending credence to local legends suggesting it has been burning for centuries. Whether it's for the science, the serenity, or the spectacle, Eternal Flame Falls stands out as a notable destination in Western New York.

Editorial Assessment

Eternal Flame Falls combines rare natural phenomena with scenic beauty, making it a must-see for visitors to Orchard Park. Although unique, it lacks the broader global fame to reach the highest ratings reserved for only the most iconic natural landmarks.

This is not an easy walk, but it is worth it if you are physically able. The path down does include lots of tree roots, steps and a portion of wet slippery rocks. Definitely good gripping shoes will come in handy, but very neat to see.

I loved it. It was a bit rainy out, but it was a nice short walk there. Really cool.

The eternal flame can be seen by taking the short 1.2 mile round trip hike down to the creek to see it. Park in the gravel lot (huge lot, no way it'll ever be full), and follow all the little flame signs with arrows and you'll easily find it. I wore Crocs even though there's a sign saying not recommended and I had no problems, made it a lot easier to walk through the creek instead of trying to keep regular shoes dry. Visited September 8th 2026 and there were only a few other people here and there, and I was alone at the flame for a couple minutes. Cool spot worth checking out, I spent 40 minutes at the park in total.

Highly suggested hike which is close by niagara. It is the largest natural gas flame and hike is doable for almost anyone which takes around 40-60min overall
