About This Adventure Destination

Coyote Buttes, located in northern Arizona near the Utah border, features one of the most dramatic and visually striking sandstone formations in the American Southwest. This area is famous for its swirling, multi-colored sandstone cliffs and ridges formed from Jurassic-era Navajo Sandstone. The highlight is "The Wave," a stunning geological formation characterized by smooth, undulating lines and vibrant red, orange, and cream hues that change throughout the day depending on light conditions. These natural sculptures were shaped by millions of years of wind and water erosion, creating a rare landscape that attracts photographers, hikers, and nature enthusiasts alike.

The region falls within the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, which is managed with strict access permits to protect its fragile environment and provide a sense of solitude for visitors. The unique textures and colors found here contrast with the surrounding desert flora, including small bushes and resilient desert plants. Coyote Buttes offers a glimpse into the geological processes that sculpted much of the Colorado Plateau, making it an important destination for both recreation and education.

Visitors appreciate the area's quiet beauty, limited crowds, and the spellbinding natural artwork that changes with the light and seasons. The buttes are part of the ancestral lands of Native American tribes, contributing a deeper cultural significance to the landscape. Its stunning formations and protected status make Coyote Buttes a standout natural destination in the Southwest.

Editorial Assessment

Coyote Buttes is highly regarded for its uniquely colorful and smooth sandstone formations, including the famous Wave, which draws outdoor enthusiasts and photographers worldwide. Its controlled access and fragile environment limit visitor numbers, preserving its natural beauty and creating a quiet experience. While not among the very top tier of global natural landmarks, it stands out as an exceptional hiking destination for those seeking rare geological landscapes in the American Southwest.

South Coyote Buttes has Incredible views, rock formations and dinosaur tracks. We were going to park at Paws Hole until we talked to Duane at the Kane county visitor center. He advised us to park at The Cottonwood Cove trailhead. This is much closer and less deep sand to walk thru. Vermilion Cliffs in also next to this trailhead. You will need a high clearance vehicle and 4x4 because of deep sand in places. We were also fortunate to find a Great Horned Owl nest with 3 owlets in a crevice in the side of a cliff face. Very cool place, worth the trip.

Most people go to The Wave at Coyote Buttes North. Coyote Buttes South makes for a more secluded experience and permits are easily attainable. There isn't one single attraction target rather it's a playground to explore and name your own rock formations. IG@heyeyron
