Wonderful hike, we spent the night with the cows, great experience. Just be careful during storms, very windy! Only one negative point: trash everywhere. We brought trash cans with us, but it's shameful that people treat such a beautiful place this way.

The Santa María Volcano is an imposing stratovolcano, 3,772 meters high, located in the department of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. It is the fourth highest volcano in the country and is world-famous for harboring the active volcano on its slopes.

Very cool volcano views with nice sunrise. We did the hike with a guide but in retrospect would have also been able to do it without one. There were only few street dogs and the path is well marked. It might be worth to have a map, especially when doing the ascent during the night because there are some path alternatives. It is really cold at the top before sunrise.
