About This Adventure Destination

Kampong Phluk Tonle Sap River Mangrove Swamp Boat Tour

Kampong Phluk, nestled in the lush landscapes of Siem Reap, Cambodia, offers a remarkable adventure along the Tonle Sap River. Known for its enchanting stilted villages and sprawling mangrove swamps, this destination provides a unique glimpse into the resilient lifestyle of the local fishing communities. The stilted houses, raised high above the ground, adapt ingeniously to the dramatic seasonal changes in water levels, creating a striking silhouette against the tranquil waters. Seasonally transforming with the flooding and receding of the river, the mangrove forests become an aquatic wonderland offering habitat to diverse wildlife, including an array of fish and bird species.

This area also holds cultural richness, as Kampong Phluk means 'harbor of the tusks,' referencing ancient trade routes once alive with merchants. The floating forests and human resilience highlight the harmony between people and nature, making it a standout destination in Southeast Asia. From the vibrant colors of daily life to the peacefulness of the natural surroundings, Kampong Phluk is both a historical treasure and an ecological haven.

It's striking to see how this village lives. It's definitely worth a visit. The round-trip tuk-tuk ride was $15, and the small boat, which we took alone, was $22 per person…expensive. That said, we were alone since it was 9:00 AM and there was no one else around. Afterwards, they offer another canoe trip for $5 per person through the mangroves. They're quick to take advantage of you, but these people are quite humble and make a living from this. They also fish, grow rice, and little else.
