About This Adventure Destination

Nestled in the heart of Cambodia's Siem Reap region, Banteay Srei Temple stands as a stunning testament to the architectural artistry of the Khmer Empire. Known as the 'Citadel of Women,' this 10th-century temple is celebrated for its intricate pink sandstone carvings that adorn its walls, offering visitors a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Hindu mythology. Unlike other temples in Angkor, Banteay Srei is remarkably well-preserved, showcasing exquisite bas-reliefs depicting legendary tales. The temple's compact size allows visitors to appreciate its detailed craftsmanship up close, making it a distinct highlight of the region. It's difficult to believe this is over 1,000 years old. It looks like it was built much more recently. They don't build things this well any more, that's for sure. It's my favourite of all the many wonderful temples here at the vast Angkor complex because it's incredibly beautiful at sunset. The stones turn red. It's quite haunting.

I have visited Banteay Srei twice. Both times, after visiting all the other temples like Ta Phrom and Angkor Wat, I thought that the scultures of Banteay Srei were far more intricate than those of the others. The red color of the stone gives the sculptings much definition. We can only imagine how it must have all looked the day it was completed, looking splendid and shiny. The temple surroundings are very pleasant. The temple is an hour away from Siem Reap city but is well worth the journey. You can combine the visit with Kbal Spean (the 1000 lingas) and the Cambodian Landmine Museum which is very close to this temple.
