This trail traces the impressive gorge carved by the Blackwater River, showcasing steep cliffs, rushing waters, and dense forests typical of the Appalachian Mountains. Its distinct combination of natural beauty and historical roots makes it one of the region’s standout landmarks.

The trail follows an old railroad bed once used for coal transport, offering visitors a relatively gentle path through dramatic terrain. Towering rock formations shaped over millions of years frame the canyon, while waterfalls, including the famous 57-foot Blackwater Falls, punctuate the landscape with dynamic visual energy. Great trail. If you’re on a bike, it is best to follow this trail from Thomas to Hendricks since there is a considerable 1200ft climb over 10 miles in the other direction.
