Majestic Peaks of Mount Kumotori

Great destination! Enjoyed the open trail and peaceful outdoor atmosphere.

From Mitsumine Shrine, I spent two days and one night hiking in a tent at Kumotori Sanso. The weather was good, and we were able to see Mt. Fuji and a sea of ​​clouds at the summit in the early morning. On the way back, I got off at Kamozawa bus stop, took a bus to Okutama station, took a bath in the hot springs, and headed home. It was great 😆

The summit of Mt. Kumotori, Tokyo's highest peak and also famous as one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains, has an almost 360-degree view, so you can enjoy a spectacular view, but the main attraction is Mt. Fuji. Especially recommended for the view is from late autumn to spring when Mt. Fuji is covered with snow. The snow-capped Mt. Fuji, colored by the sunsets and sunrises, is overwhelmingly spectacular. From the summit, you can also see Mt. Akagi, Oku-Nikko, Mt. Tsukuba, and the urban areas of the Kanto Plain, including central Tokyo. At an altitude of 2017m, the view is quite good. The real summit of Mt. Kumotori is located on the border between Saitama and Tokyo, and there is a fine stone marker as well as a mountain marker. Approximately 50 meters to the south is the border between Tokyo, Saitama, and Yamanashi prefectures, where a mountain marker has also been set up, and there is a relatively new, slightly larger, unmanned evacuation hut. Personally, this is more open and has more space, so I recommend this if you want to rest at the top of the mountain. The view to the south from here is especially spectacular, and the best part is that you can see the gentle stone ridge that leads to Mt. Nanatsuishi.

I hadn't climbed Mt. Kumotori in over 10 years, and I was suffering from withdrawal symptoms, so I took paid leave to climb Mt. Kumotori this Friday, two days after a heavy snowfall.I arrived at the Tanbayama village parking lot (Kamosawa) just after 6 a.m. I got there and started right away.I got to the Kosode Norikoshi trailhead and got off to a good start, but I was planning to climb Mt. Nanatsuishi from the Nanatsuishi hut and traverse the stone ridge, but I ended up winding up by mistake, and it would be too much of a hassle to go back now, so I just stopped. I jumped out to Nazaka, and from there I walked up the stone ridge to Mt. Kumotori.On the way back, I climbed Mt. Nanatsuishi from Bunazaka, and from there I descended to Kamozawa.There was plenty of snow on the way, but today the temperature soared, so I decided to take the lower elevation mountain trail. The snow had rotted, and I had to wear chain spikes from Nanatsuishi Hut to Kosode Norikoshi to avoid getting stuck in the rotten snow, which was an added bonus, but my long-standing withdrawal symptoms from Mt. Kumotori completely subsided. Ah, that was fun 😸
