The final collapse of the Towada Caldera caused a massive erosion of the volcanic landscape formed by the interaction of Hakkoda and Towada. It has an overwhelming, unique feel; as far as I know, I don't know of any other gorge quite like Oirase. The gentle, almost imperceptible slope due to the concave topography, the unique vegetation where moss compensates for the sparse soil, and the overall atmosphere are incredibly mysterious. However, if you want to fully enjoy Oirase, you should carefully plan your route, considering the time of year and whether you'll be walking or cycling. Although there's a section of about 15km, it can feel chaotic due to overtourism. While you can certainly appreciate the atmosphere by driving through, if the chaos continues, bypass construction and restrictions on private cars are likely.

There were more roadside parking spaces than I expected. However, I think the key to enjoying the Oirase Gorge is to do some research beforehand on where to park and explore. It's difficult to turn back once you've driven past a spot.

🟢 Michelin Green Guide to Forests The lush forests and clear streams, designated as natural monuments, offer many spectacular views, and you can fully experience negative ions near the waterfalls. The best time to visit is from mid-May to mid-June when the greenery is beautiful, or from mid-to-late October when the leaves turn red and yellow.
