I have to say, this is a hard hike. I saw too many people attempting it that really had no business on it. that said, there's just not much here. the waterfall is just meh once you get there, and there's only two real good views of the canyon on the way down. We ended up continuing across the waterfall area and up an unmaintained trail where we got multiple spectacular views, and stopped for a snack at a picnic table overlooking everything. i gave the trail 4* because in my opinion it's not worth the effort. It probably is worth doing for the one major canyon lookout, but the additional effort to get to the falls is a waste unless you're going to continue on the unmaintained portion.

It took us about 2 to 3 hours to complete the round trip, and it was truly magnificent from start to finish. The trail offers several superb viewpoints of the canyon, each more impressive than the last. There's a small waterfall at the end—nice, but not the most spectacular part of the hike. And a little unexpected bonus: a rooster followed us for almost a kilometer! It was both very funny and a bit bucolic, a typical Hawaiian touch. Note: the parking is paid (it accepts credit cards and Apple Pay).
