About This Adventure Destination

The Mist Trail and John Muir Trail trailhead, located near Tuolumne Meadows in California’s Yosemite National Park, offers one of the region’s most memorable outdoor experiences. This area is distinguished by its striking granite cliffs and two of Yosemite’s most impressive waterfalls—Vernal and Nevada Falls. The Mist Trail provides a rigorous climb past thunderous cascades and plunging drops, while the John Muir Trail offers a longer, gentler route through expansive wilderness with sweeping views of Yosemite Valley and Half Dome.

Key highlights include the steep granite steps of the Mist Trail, which bring hikers close to the power and spray of Vernal Falls, creating a misty atmosphere that inspires both awe and refreshment. The trail continues upward to Nevada Falls, where smoother rock slabs offer a perfect spot to pause and admire the surroundings. The John Muir Trail, named after the famous naturalist who played a major role in preserving Yosemite, runs parallel here, serving as an access point for longer treks into the High Sierra.

Flora in the area includes towering sequoias and wildflowers, while wildlife like black bears and mule deer can occasionally be spotted. The trails serve as a living reminder of Yosemite’s conservation history and the natural beauty that has drawn visitors since the park’s establishment in 1890.

This location stands out because of its combination of challenging terrain, breathtaking water features, and historical significance, making it a must-visit for hikers of all experience levels who appreciate natural grandeur and a well-maintained trail system.

Great but challenging trail with lots of elevation gain. Take it slow and bring water.

We did only to the bridge in snow. I would suggest you have snow microspikes for your shoes and hiking poles. It's quite slippery. It's a nice hike.

Less intense with better coverage and better marking for identification of sections on trail in comparison to the high Yosemite fall trail.
