Frequently asked questions
Planning Your Outing
What is a railbike?
Nickel Plate Express uses USA-built Rail Gliders that sit on the rails and are pedal powered. Each family-friendly unit seats up to four passengers and is designed to give a new perspective on the rail line.
Who can ride railbikes?
Railbikes are designed for people of all ages and abilities; seats are infinitely adjustable (even while seated). The manufacturer suggests a weight limit of 250 lbs per person or 1000 lbs per bike.
Can children ride the railbikes?
Yes. Children may ride with appropriate adult guidance. Groups with children under 16 should be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Harnesses are available for toddlers and infants under 2 may ride secured to an adult in an infant carrier.
How do the tours work?
All tours begin with the group departing alongside the guide. Participants then disperse along the trail, keeping up to 500 feet between groups, allowing each party to enjoy the open air and the railroad at its own pace.
Who else will be on the tracks?
Nickel Plate Express railbikes occupy the rail line during tours; no other tours operate at the same time and the train will not be running. Staff coordinate daily to release a track bulletin and manage schedules.
What is your weather policy?
Tours operate in light to moderately inclement weather when safety permits. Tours are canceled for heavy, persistent rain or threatening weather; thunderstorm-related cancellations are typically decided about 30 minutes before departure. If Nickel Plate Express cancels for weather, a full refund is offered.
