Participants meet on shore at a designated La Jolla or Point Loma meeting point for a pre-dive briefing and breath-hold training, then enter the kelp to practice diving technique, fish identification and hunting with pole spears under the supervision of trained spearfishing guides.

Required items include a California fishing license, wetsuit (a 5mm open-cell spearfishing wetsuit is highly recommended), mask and snorkel, gloves and booties, dive knife, fins, and weight belt/weights.
