On the edge of County Donegal, this half-day offering from Donegal Equestrian Centre is built for riders who already know the basics and want to step out onto the sand. The program begins with an introduction to your horse — grooming, saddling and bridling — moves into an arena lesson to cover the pre-requisite skills, then ventures out for a 1½-hour ride across the dunes with instructor support and the option to ride different horses during the experience.

After the arena session you’ll ride out onto the sand dunes for a sustained 1½-hour stretch — the signature portion of the half-day experience that puts newly practiced skills to use in an expansive coastal setting.
Hands-On Grooming and Arena Instruction
The experience starts with hands-on time: grooming, saddling and bridling, then an arena lesson that reinforces mounting, rein work, steering, slowing and stopping before you head out on the dunes.
Instructor Guidance and Photo Keepsakes
Instructors provide ongoing support and will assess riders’ control before leaving the yard; guides also carry a camera and can take photos from horseback to email after the ride (subject to conditions on the dunes).

What the Half-Day Feels Like
The session moves deliberately: a practical, tactile introduction to your horse; a focused arena lesson to confirm you can mount, hold reins English-style, steer, slow and stop; then an escorted dune ride that lets you apply those skills in open terrain. Instructors monitor ability throughout — if you don’t demonstrate the required control the group will remain onsite — and riders may switch horses during the day to broaden their experience and confidence.

The full experience runs for 3 hours; riders are asked to arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled start to book in and be fitted for hats.
Bring suitable outdoor clothing and footwear for riding; hats will be fitted on arrival. Guides can take photos from horseback and will email them afterwards (subject to dune/tide and safety conditions).
Bookings must respect the operator’s age and weight guidelines; the centre may keep riders onsite if the instructor determines they lack the required control for the dunes.

Can complete beginners join?
No — the ride is not suitable for complete beginners. All riders must have prior instruction and be able to demonstrate mounting, rein handling, steering and stopping.
Is there a weight limit?
Yes. The operator’s upper weight limit is 220 lbs (16½ stone / 105 kg); riders exceeding this cannot be accepted for safety and horse welfare reasons.
Will someone take photos during the ride?
Guides carry a camera and are happy to take photos from horseback and email them to you; availability of photos is subject to tide conditions, dune traffic and group safety.
What happens if I don’t demonstrate the required skills?
If you do not show sufficient control in the arena the ride will remain onsite; the instructor’s assessment is final.
Do riders stay on the same horse for the whole session?
You may ride different horses during the experience to broaden your skills and confidence.
