Outing Highlights
Aoraki/Mount Cook and the Tasman Glacier
From an orientation in Christchurch you cross the Canterbury Plains into the Southern Alps to Lake Tekapo and Mount Cook village. Walks to Sealy Tarns and the Hooker Valley place you beneath Aoraki/Mount Cook; nearby the Tasman Glacier and its rapidly growing meltwater lake and moraines are a central focus of the early days.
West Coast Rainforest, Ōkarito Lagoon and Franz Josef
The itinerary shifts into lush West Coast rainforest where guided kayaking on Ōkarito Lagoon introduces a large unmodified wetland home to migratory birds including the kotuku; nearby Franz Josef offers the rare sight of a glacier descending from high alpine ice into temperate forest—Franz Josef drops from 2,700 m to 500 m over roughly 9 km.
Coastal Canyons, Pancake Rocks and Lakefront Walks
The trip threads coastal and inland trails: Pororari River’s limestone canyon and swim-ready pools, the Truman Track and beaches at Punakaiki, and the Pancake Rocks and blowholes—each stop pairs short hikes with the chance to explore tidal sea caves and river resurgence sites.
What the day feels like
What the trip feels like
This is a travel rhythm of movement and short, focused outings: mornings spent on a hike or kayak, afternoons for transfers and lodge time, and evenings around regional meals. You move south and then west from Christchurch across the Mackenzie basin to Aoraki/Mount Cook, descend into lake-country at Wānaka and Queenstown, then traverse Haast Pass to the rainforests and glaciers of the West Coast before following the coast north into Paparoa and returning over Arthur’s Pass.
