Between Rock and River: A Day on the Danube Gorge & Banat Waterfalls

Stepping off the minivan just before the river bends, the Danube feels like an old, deliberate thing: slow, wide, and unbothered by a century of borders and barges. You board a small boat and the engine's staccato dissolves into the hush of limestone cliffs. Water pinches through rock here, and the gorge narrows until the current seems to have carved a doorway through the Carpathians. On the far bank, a colossal face stares back — the carved likeness of Decebalus, its flat, weathered planes catching the afternoon light — and for a moment the scale of human ambition seems to match the scale of the river.
