Frequently asked questions

Planning Your Outing

Where do I meet for my lesson?

The operator’s mobile trailer is located by the Lyall Bay Surf Life Saving Club; meet 30 minutes before your lesson for check‑in at 78 Lyall Parade, Lyall Bay.

Are lessons still at Lyall Bay given the wastewater issue?

Because of an ongoing wastewater discharge at Lyall Bay, lessons are currently taking place instead at Titahi Bay, Paekakariki or Otaki; check booking notices and the app for the venue for your session.

What should I bring to a lesson?

Bring swimwear, a towel, drinking water and sunscreen; wetsuits and boards are provided as part of the lesson.

What equipment is provided and what costs extra?

Lessons include Surfing NZ–approved softboards and C‑Skins wetsuits; extras such as booties, gloves and hoods are available for $10 a pair, paid on arrival.

How do I know when lessons are running?

Download the Wellington Surf Lessons app to receive notifications 2–3 days before classes are scheduled; lesson times are surf‑dependent and new slots are added to the calendar regularly.

What happens if the weather or surf is unsuitable?

If conditions are unsuitable for surfing, the operator will offer you an alternative day to book.

Can I take multiple lessons to progress?

Yes — the lessons are progressive; the operator recommends multiple beginner and intermediate lessons alongside practice rentals to improve.
