Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Established in 1979, Shek O Country Park covers an area of approximately 7.6 square kilometers on the southeastern tip of Hong Kong Island. The park’s terrain is characterized by steep hills, rocky cliffs, and expansive sandy beaches, including the well-known Shek O Beach. It protects a variety of natural habitats such as coastal shrublands, woodlands, and rocky shores, providing shelter to local flora like pandanus trees and fauna including native birds and butterflies. The park is rich in geological features, with volcanic rock formations that tell the story of Hong Kong’s ancient volcanic past. Visitors are drawn to the park for its popular hiking routes, such as the Dragon's Back Trail, which offers panoramic views of the South China Sea and nearby islands. Shek O Village, adjacent to the park, adds cultural flavor with its fishing village charm and seaside eateries. The park’s accessibility and variety of terrain make it a favored destination for hikers, climbers, beachgoers, and nature lovers. Its combination of natural beauty, diverse recreational opportunities, and proximity to the city renders it one of Hong Kong’s most beloved outdoor destinations.
