About Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe UNESCO World Heritage Site

Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe is a vast historic park in Kassel, Germany, celebrated for its monumental water features, neoclassical architecture, and scenic hiking paths through a unique blend of natural and designed landscapes.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located on the Schlossberg hill in Kassel, Hesse, Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe is the largest hillside park in Europe, covering approximately 2.4 square kilometers (about 600 acres). This UNESCO World Heritage Site combines natural forested areas with grand artificial structures and waterworks, creating a unique landscape that blends Baroque and neoclassical styles with the Romantic idea of the natural landscape. The park’s centerpiece is the Hercules monument, an iconic copper statue atop an octagonal cascaded structure standing 70 meters tall, which feeds a spectacular water feature involving a 350-meter cascading waterfall, giant fountains, and a water basin at the lower end. Water flows are scheduled and attract visitors who come to witness the impressive gravity-fed water displays, including the Water Theatre and the Great Fountain. The park’s vast forested areas offer numerous walking and hiking trails with panoramic views over Kassel and the surrounding countryside. The park was developed between the late 17th and early 19th centuries, primarily under the direction of Landgrave Charles of Hesse and architect Giovanni Francesco Guerniero. In addition to the Hercules monument and water features, notable landmarks include Wilhelmshöhe Palace, housing an art museum with Rembrandt and Old Masters paintings. Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe offers a unique combination of cultural heritage and outdoor recreation, attracting visitors who enjoy history, architecture, garden design, hiking, and spectacular natural vistas.
