The Alpine Loop National Backcountry Byway is a 63-mile off-road route located in the San Juan National Forest, connecting the historic towns of Ouray, Silverton, and Lake City in southwestern Colorado. The route traverses multiple high mountain passes, including Engineer Pass (12,800 feet) and Cinnamon Pass (12,640 feet), and offers dramatic views of jagged peaks, deep valleys, and wildflower meadows during summer months. The byway covers a rugged landscape shaped by extensive mining history, with numerous old mining structures and ghost towns that provide a glimpse into the 19th-century silver and gold rush era.
