Spanning over 4.3 million acres in east-central Idaho, Salmon Challis National Forest is a remarkable expanse of natural beauty featuring mountains, valleys, rivers, and vast wilderness areas. The forest is home to parts of the Sawtooth, Lemhi, and Lost River mountain ranges. Its diverse ecosystem supports a wide array of wildlife, including elk, deer, wolves, and the threatened Canada lynx. The Salmon River, known as the 'River of No Return,' winds through the forest, offering challenging whitewater rafting and stunning scenic views. This area holds historical significance as part of Lewis and Clark's journey and boasts ancient Native American sites. Recreational opportunities are abundant with over 1,500 miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking.
