Guajataca State Forest, located in the northwest region of Puerto Rico across the municipalities of Quebradillas, San Sebastián, and Isabela, is one of the island's most important protected areas showcasing tropical karst topography. Characterized by rugged limestone hills, caves, sinkholes, and mogotes (steep, isolated hills), this forest is an ecological refuge rich with native species and dense vegetation. It harbors a subtropical moist forest ecosystem featuring species such as Sierra Palm, West Indian Mahogany, and numerous orchids. The forest's elevation ranges from about 300 to 1,000 feet, creating varied microhabitats, including dry limestone forests and shaded ravines. Historically, the region has cultural significance as the karst formed natural barriers and provided shelter for indigenous Taíno populations.
