Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Minnamurra Rainforest Park is located within Budderoo National Park near Kiama, New South Wales, Australia. Spanning approximately 580 hectares, the park protects one of the last remaining pockets of warm temperate and subtropical rainforest in the Illawarra region. The area is characterized by towering Coachwood and Sassafras trees, dense fern gullies, and rich biodiversity including lyrebirds, brushtail possums, and numerous bird species. Formed on a dolerite plateau with deep soil and high rainfall, the park supports a unique rainforest ecosystem distinct from surrounding more open eucalypt landscapes. Historically, the land was inhabited by the Wodi Wodi people of the Dharawal Nation, whose connection to the forest and waterways remains significant. The park features a boardwalk that weaves through the rainforest, providing easy access to the protected environment, and is complemented by picnic areas and a visitor center. Key recreational activities include walking, birdwatching, and photography, making it a popular spot for families and nature enthusiasts. Seasonal highlights include vibrant fungi displays and the calls of native birds. The park's natural beauty combined with well-marked trails and educational signage make it a valuable natural attraction for both casual visitors and those interested in botany and ecology.
