About Morristown National Historical Park

Morristown National Historical Park preserves key sites from the American Revolutionary War, featuring rich history combined with scenic trails and outdoor exploration opportunities.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Morristown National Historical Park is located in northern New Jersey and commemorates the strategic military encampments of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War winters of 1777 and 1779–1780. The park is divided into three main units: Jockey Hollow, Fort Nonsense, and Washington's Headquarters Museum and Ford Mansion in Morristown. Jockey Hollow contains the largest encampment, where over 10,000 soldiers endured harsh winter conditions, leaving behind evidence of military life, stone huts, and a preserved landscape. Fort Nonsense, a small hilltop site in Morristown, offers sweeping views and insight into defensive military planning. The Ford Mansion and Washington’s Headquarters Museum provide a rich historical narrative through restored buildings and exhibits about George Washington’s leadership and the Revolutionary War’s regional significance. The park features over 18 miles of accessible hiking trails winding through hardwood forests and open fields, offering visitors both educational and recreational activities such as historical tours, wildlife observation, and photography. The area supports typical northeastern forest species including white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and various songbirds, adding natural appeal to the historical experience. Seasonal events, ranger-led programs, and educational workshops enhance public engagement with the park's cultural and natural resources. Morristown National Historical Park offers a unique blend of history and outdoor recreation, attracting visitors interested in America’s colonial heritage and scenic walking paths in a peaceful setting near a suburban region.
