Established in 1987, La Cangreja National Park spans over 6,500 acres of protected tropical rainforest and cloud forest in the Puntarenas province of Costa Rica. The park's name, meaning "The Crab," references a local legend and highlights the area's rich biodiversity. The terrain is mountainous with elevations ranging up to about 1,200 meters (3,900 feet), featuring winding trails that lead visitors through dense forests, past pristine streams, and to several notable waterfalls. One of the park's most remarkable natural landmarks is the Cerro Cangreja peak offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the Pacific coastline on clear days.
Ecologically, La Cangreja is home to numerous species including howler monkeys, spider monkeys, toucans, and various reptiles and amphibians, providing excellent opportunities for wildlife observation and bird watching. The park plays an important role in regional conservation efforts, safeguarding important water sources and forest ecosystems.
Visitors are attracted to its well-maintained trail system that ranges from easy walks to moderate hikes, culminating in scenic spots like the Tarzan Waterfall, a popular swimming destination. The park is less commercialized than some other Costa Rican parks, offering a more tranquil and intimate nature experience. Camping is permitted at designated sites, and local guides are available for hire to enhance visitor understanding of the flora, fauna, and cultural significance.
La Cangreja's accessibility from nearby towns such as San Isidro de El General makes it a favored day trip or overnight destination for both domestic and international travelers seeking to immerse themselves in Costa Rica’s rich natural heritage.
