About Tapantí-Macizo de la Muerte National Park

Tapantí-Macizo de la Muerte National Park is a lush and mountainous tropical rainforest park in Costa Rica renowned for its vibrant biodiversity, extensive hiking trails, and spectacular waterfalls.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Established in 1982, Tapantí-Macizo de la Muerte National Park spans a rugged region in the central highlands of Costa Rica, primarily within the Cartago Province. The park encompasses an expansive area of cloud forest and rainforests that form part of the Talamanca Mountain Range, including steep slopes and deep river valleys. This region plays an important role in protecting the watersheds that supply life to the Orosi and Reventazón river basins. Ecologically, the park supports diverse flora and fauna including rare orchids, abundant bromeliads, and towering tropical trees, while providing habitat for endangered animals such as the Resplendent Quetzal, Baird’s Tapir, jaguars, and various species of hummingbirds and butterflies. The park offers excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation, particularly hiking along well-maintained trails, birdwatching, photography, and nature observation. Notable natural landmarks include the spectacular Tapantí waterfall and the spring-fed Ríos Bonito and Macho rivers, which contribute to the park's rich aquatic ecosystems. Visitors are often drawn to trails that offer misty cloud forest vistas and encounters with diverse wildlife. The park is integrated into the larger network of protected areas within the La Amistad Biosphere Reserve, underscoring its international conservation significance. Due to its mountainous terrain and abundant rainfall, the park offers a cool, moist climate ideal for experiencing Costa Rica’s famed biodiversity, but also requires careful preparation for hiking and exploration.
