About Catalina Island Conservancy

Catalina Island Conservancy protects over 88% of Santa Catalina Island, offering diverse outdoor recreation opportunities across rugged landscapes, coastal vistas, and rare ecosystems.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Catalina Island Conservancy manages approximately 42,000 acres of Santa Catalina Island, located off the coast of Southern California. This unique island ecosystem features steep canyons, chaparral-covered hills, oak woodlands, grasslands, and pristine coastal areas. The Conservancy's stewardship focuses on habitat restoration, native species preservation, and sustainable recreational access. The island’s ecology is notable for species such as the Catalina Island fox, bald eagles, and endemic plant life. The Conservancy maintains a network of over 165 miles of trails suitable for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, leading visitors to spectacular overlooks, secluded coves, and historic landmarks including the Wrigley Memorial and the historic Isthmus town of Two Harbors. Popular activities include camping, wildlife viewing, snorkeling, and kayaking. The Conservancy also oversees a controlled program to protect native species and control invasive plants and animals. Visitors can access the island via ferry from Long Beach, San Pedro, or Dana Point, or by private boat or helicopter. As an area with significant ecological sensitivity, the Conservancy emphasizes ethical outdoor practices and education to preserve Catalina’s natural heritage for future generations.
