Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Kaʻōhao Beach, or Lanikai Beach, is located in the town of Kailua on the windward coast of Oahu, Hawaii. The beach stretches along a crescent of powdery white sand bordered by calm, shallow waters that are ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and paddle sports. The offshore Mokulua Islands, two small islets visible just beyond the reef, create a striking backdrop for visitors and provide habitats for seabirds and marine life. The water here is usually calm thanks to a protective offshore reef, making it one of the safest swimming beaches on the island. The beach has been consistently rated among the most beautiful in the United States and attracts both locals and tourists early in the morning for tranquil sunrises. Ecologically, the area supports coastal dune vegetation and marine ecosystems that are actively protected to maintain beach quality and prevent erosion. Historically, Lanikai means "heavenly sea" in Hawaiian, reflecting the area's natural beauty and cultural significance. There are no public parking lots directly on the beach, preserving its quiet atmosphere, and access is typically via residential streets. Beyond swimming and sunbathing, kayaking to the Mokulua Islands, bird watching, and photography are popular activities. Visitors are encouraged to respect the residential community and natural environment. The beach is part of a protected shoreline managed under local regulations designed to preserve its natural state and recreational value.
