About Lake St Clair Reserve

Lake St Clair Reserve is a pristine conservation area in Tasmania featuring Australia's deepest freshwater lake, offering exceptional hiking, boating, and wildlife viewing opportunities.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Lake St Clair Reserve is located in the Central Highlands of Tasmania, within the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. The reserve centers around Lake St Clair, the deepest freshwater lake in Australia, with depths reaching over 200 meters. Surrounded by rugged mountains, dense temperate rainforests, and alpine moorlands, the reserve showcases a diverse and unique ecosystem home to species such as the Tasmanian devil, platypus, echidnas, and the endangered wedge-tailed eagle. The area has a rich Aboriginal heritage, with the lake known as Leeawulenna to the Palawa people. Recreationally, the reserve is a popular destination for bushwalking, especially as the southern terminus of the Overland Track, which spans approximately 65 miles from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair. Visitors can enjoy scenic boat cruises on the lake, fishing for native trout, and camping at well-maintained sites near the lake shore. The reserve’s combination of pristine aquatic environments, mountainous landscapes, and abundant wildlife makes it a striking destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. Facilities include the Lake St Clair Visitor Centre, boat ramps, picnic areas, and guided tours. Seasonal changes bring autumn color displays and occasional winter snow, enhancing the area's scenic appeal and challenging conditions for adventurers. The remoteness and natural beauty of Lake St Clair Reserve provide a peaceful retreat that remains largely untouched by urban development.
