Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Murphy-Hanrehan Park Reserve spans over 2,200 acres just south of the Twin Cities in Minnesota, making it one of the largest park reserves operated by Three Rivers Park District. The park's geography features rolling bluffs, oak savannas, hardwood forests, wetlands, and prairie remnants. These varied habitats support abundant wildlife, including white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, numerous bird species, and a variety of native plants. Historically, the land was used for farming before being protected and restored to native ecosystems. Visitors can explore more than 25 miles of multi-use trails designed for hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders, with some routes specially groomed for winter snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The park is known for its well-maintained trail system, picnic areas, and open fields that showcase Minnesota’s natural prairie and woodland environments. Notable features include diverse wildflower and birdwatching opportunities in spring and summer, as well as vantage points offering panoramic views across the park’s scenic bluffs. Murphy-Hanrehan Park Reserve appeals to outdoor enthusiasts seeking a natural escape close to urban areas, allowing for peaceful exploration, wildlife observation, and year-round recreation. The park’s blend of forest, prairie, and wetlands makes it a valuable site for both environmental education and active outdoor pursuits.
