About Nene Washes Nature Reserve

Nene Washes Nature Reserve is a vital floodplain wetland area renowned for its rich birdlife and seasonal flooding, offering excellent opportunities for wildlife observation and peaceful nature walks.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Nene Washes Nature Reserve is a unique and important wetland site located along the River Nene in Cambridgeshire, England. It functions primarily as a flood storage area, designed to reduce the risk of flooding downstream while supporting rare and diverse wetland habitats. The reserve spans approximately 930 hectares of seasonally flooded washland, grassland, and reed beds which are carefully managed to maintain optimal conditions for breeding and overwintering wildfowl. The controlled flooding each winter creates expansive shallow waters that attract significant numbers of waterbirds, including nationally and internationally important populations of Bewick’s swans, Eurasian wigeon, and northern lapwing. The reserve also hosts rare plant species and supports a variety of invertebrates and amphibians. Historically, the area was used as farmland prone to annual flooding, but over time it has transformed into an internationally important refuge for water birds and other wildlife. Visitors to Nene Washes can explore several footpaths and hides situated around the reserve that provide excellent vantage points for birdwatching and photography. The flat terrain and open landscapes make it accessible for walkers and naturalists of all levels. The site is managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) in coordination with local partners, ensuring ongoing conservation efforts that balance flood control with habitat preservation. The combination of active land management, seasonal flooding, and rich biodiversity makes Nene Washes a key destination for outdoor enthusiasts interested in wetland environments and birding.
