About Oberpfälzer Wald Nature Park

Oberpfälzer Wald Nature Park offers extensive forested landscapes, rolling hills, and rural cultural landmarks perfect for hiking, cycling, and experiencing traditional Bavarian countryside.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Situated in the Upper Palatinate region of eastern Bavaria, Germany, Oberpfälzer Wald Nature Park encompasses an area characterized by densely forested hills, meadows, and small lakes. The park spans about 1,135 square kilometers, making it one of Bavaria's largest nature parks. The geography includes the low mountain ranges of the Oberpfälzer Wald (Upper Palatinate Forest) along the border with the Czech Republic, featuring rounded hills, granite outcrops, and mixed coniferous and deciduous woodlands. Ecologically, the park is a habitat for a variety of wildlife such as red deer, wild boar, black storks, and endangered bat species, with extensive areas protected for forest and meadow ecosystems. The park's history is rich with remnants of medieval castles, traditional timber-frame villages, and historic glassmaking sites reflecting the region's cultural heritage. Recreational opportunities include over 2,500 kilometers of marked hiking and biking trails, including thematic routes like the Goldsteig Trail and nature discovery paths. Popular landmarks inside the park include the striking Weißenstein Castle ruins, the tranquil Steinwald ridge, and several nature reserves such as the protected Vogelschutzgebiet (bird sanctuary) at the Steinwald. Visitors are drawn to the park for its peaceful landscapes, outdoor sport possibilities, and cultural encounters with local Bavarian traditions and gastronomy. Year-round activities range from summer forest hikes and mountain biking to winter cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The park offers structured visitor centers, guided tours, and family-friendly nature education programs, making it an excellent destination for both active recreation and nature study.
