About Parque Natural de las Fragas do Eume

Parque Natural de las Fragas do Eume is a lush, Atlantic forest reserve in Galicia, Spain, renowned for its ancient broadleaf woodland and scenic river canyon, offering exceptional hiking, wildlife observation, and historical exploration.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Parque Natural de las Fragas do Eume, located in the autonomous community of Galicia in northwestern Spain, encompasses approximately 9,000 hectares of one of the best-preserved Atlantic oak forests (fraga) in Europe. The park is centered around the Eume River, which carves a deep canyon through steep cliffs and dense woodland, creating a rich natural corridor that supports a diverse ecosystem. Characterized by ancient oak, chestnut, birch, and hazel trees, the forest sustains a variety of wildlife such as roe deer, wild boar, otters, and numerous bird species including raptors and woodpeckers. The park’s temperate and humid Atlantic climate fosters a verdant environment noted for its mosses, lichens, and ferns that carpet the forest floor and trees.

Historically, the park is dotted with cultural landmarks, the most prominent being the Monastery of Caaveiro, a 10th-century Benedictine monastery perched dramatically above the river. Numerous small chapels, hermitages, and traditional stone bridges evoke Galicia’s cultural heritage amidst the wild landscape. Visitors can explore over 100 kilometers of marked trails offering varied difficulty levels, from gentle river walks to challenging canyon routes. Popular trails include the Camino da Pasarela, which follows the river gorge along wooden catwalks, providing close proximity to waterfalls and wildlife habitats.

The park appeals to hikers, birdwatchers, photographers, and nature lovers seeking to immerse themselves in a rare, ancient temperate forest with rich biodiversity and cultural significance. Its proximity to towns such as Pontedeume and Monfero makes access convenient, while its tranquil atmosphere offers a prime destination for ecotourism and outdoor recreation year-round.
