Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Woodbridge Preserve encompasses over 1,100 acres of forest, wetlands, meadows, and streams within Middlesex County, New Jersey. The preserve protects a range of ecosystems including hardwood forests, tidal wetlands, and vernal pools that sustain native flora and fauna. Rich in wildlife, the area offers excellent bird watching opportunities and is a habitat for species such as ospreys, herons, and red-tailed hawks. The preserve was acquired by the Township of Woodbridge to provide permanent green space and to protect critical water resources and wildlife corridors. It is open year-round and features over 5 miles of maintained trails that wind through upland forests and along marsh edges. Key recreation options include hiking, birding, nature photography, and educational programs offered seasonally through the preserve’s environmental center. A notable landmark within the preserve is the 18th-century Wigginton Farm ruins, a historical remnant that connects visitors to the area's past. Woodbridge Preserve appeals to families, school groups, and outdoor enthusiasts seeking a peaceful natural setting close to urban centers. The preserve also serves as an essential open space buffer contributing to regional conservation efforts and water quality protection in the nearby Raritan River and Arthur Kill waterway.
