Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1963, encompasses approximately 8,443 acres in northeastern South Carolina along the western bank of the Pee Dee River. The refuge was created to protect and restore bottomland hardwood forests, swamps, and floodplain wetlands that provide critical habitat for a wide variety of migratory birds, waterfowl, and other wildlife. The terrain includes riverine wetlands, oxbow lakes, beaver ponds, and forested uplands.
