About Parc Natural de l'Alt Pirineu

Parc Natural de l'Alt Pirineu is the largest natural park in Catalonia, offering rugged mountain landscapes and diverse outdoor activities in the heart of the Pyrenees.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Parc Natural de l'Alt Pirineu encompasses a vast mountainous area located in the northwestern Pyrenean region of Catalonia, Spain. Established in 2003, it covers approximately 69,850 hectares, making it Catalonia's largest protected natural space. The park is defined by its dramatic alpine scenery, including prominent mountain peaks like Pic de Coma Pedrosa, the highest point in Andorra nearby, as well as deep valleys, glacial lakes, and dense forests. This region provides critical habitat for a variety of wildlife such as the Pyrenean chamois (isard), brown bears, bearded vultures, and golden eagles. The flora includes endemic and protected species adapted to high altitudes and Mediterranean mountain climates. Historically, the area has been shaped by rural pastoralism, with traditional stone villages and cultural legacies that remain evident today. Visitors are drawn to activities like hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, wildlife watching, and winter sports in designated areas. Notable landmarks include the scenic lakes of the Bouillouses reservoir, the restored traditional mountain architecture, and important cultural sites like the Sanctuary of Núria in the park’s broader region. The park’s extensive trail network allows visitors to explore remote wilderness and experience spectacular panoramic views. It appeals to outdoor enthusiasts seeking solitude, nature immersion, and discovery of Catalan Pyrenean heritage.
