Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Sierra del Segura Natural Park spans over 170,000 hectares across the provinces of Jaén and Albacete in Andalusia, southeastern Spain. Characterized by its dramatic karstic limestone mountains, deep ravines, and abundant watercourses, the park encompasses part of the Prebetic System of the Baetic Cordillera. The area is biologically rich with extensive Mediterranean forests featuring holm oak, pine, and juniper, alongside diverse shrublands and riparian vegetation along river valleys. This diverse habitat supports wildlife such as the Spanish ibex, golden eagle, otters, and diverse amphibian species. The park also preserves a rich cultural heritage, with ancient villages like Riópar and Yeste, and archaeological sites reflecting human occupation since prehistoric times. Outdoor recreation is a major draw, with established hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails that traverse scenic viewpoints and natural landmarks such as the blue waters of the Fuensanta Reservoir and the dramatic cliffs of the Rio Segura canyon. The park’s wild rivers provide opportunities for fishing and paddling.
