It encompasses the Sauerland region and the Rothaar mountain range, featuring a varied landscape of dense coniferous and mixed forests, peat bogs, mountain streams, and striking ridges. The park's geography is characterized by rounded uplands reaching elevations up to 843 meters at the Langenberg peak, the highest mountain in North Rhine-Westphalia.
