Žumberak-Samoborsko Gorje Nature Park is a mountainous protected area in western Croatia offering rich biodiversity, cultural heritage, and a range of outdoor activities including hiking, cycling, and nature observation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Žumberak-Samoborsko Gorje Nature Park, established in 1999, is situated in the western part of Croatia, bordering Slovenia. Covering a diverse landscape of rolling hills, karst formations, dense forests, meadows, and clear streams, the park is known for its pristine natural environment and cultural landmarks. The park encompasses the Žumberak Mountains and the Samoborsko Gorje (Samobor Hills), with elevations reaching up to 880 meters at Sveta Gera peak. The geology of the area is predominantly karst limestone, giving rise to caves, springs, and distinctive rock formations. Ecologically, the park hosts a significant range of flora and fauna, including mixed oak and beech forests, endemic plant species, and rich wildlife like deer, wild boar, foxes, and a variety of bird species. It is an important habitat for some rare and protected species in Croatia. The park has a strong cultural identity with traditional villages, old churches, mansions, and remnants of the historic border defense system, including the renowned Žumberak Uskoks who played a role during the Ottoman conflicts. Key recreational opportunities include extensive hiking and cycling trails connecting picturesque villages and natural landmarks such as the Okić Fortress ruins, the St. Jakob Church, and multiple observation points offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and the nearby capital city Zagreb on clear days. Visitors can also enjoy mushroom picking, birdwatching, and local festivals celebrating regional customs. The park’s quiet, natural ambiance and accessible trail network make it a sought-after destination for ecotourists and outdoor enthusiasts seeking a blend of nature and cultural heritage close to urban areas.
