About Armand Bayou Nature Center

Armand Bayou Nature Center is one of the largest urban wilderness preserves in the United States, offering diverse coastal wetland habitats and extensive opportunities for wildlife observation and outdoor education.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Armand Bayou Nature Center is a 2,500-acre protected coastal wetland preserve located in Pasadena and Houston, Texas. The preserve encompasses marshes, prairies, forested wetlands, and riparian zones offering rich habitats for a broad variety of native flora and fauna. The bayou, one of the last remaining natural bayous in the Houston metropolitan area, supports a diverse collection of plants and wildlife including several endangered species. Historically, the area was home to Native American tribes and later protected as open space to conserve its natural integrity amid rapid urbanization. Today, the center is operated by the Armand Bayou Nature Center organization, providing public education, research opportunities, and recreational activities such as hiking and birdwatching. The preserve features over 7 miles of well-maintained trails through pine flatwoods and wetlands, along with an observation tower offering panoramic views of the bayou and surrounding habitats.
