Goat Cave Karst Nature Preserve is a 148-acre protected area located in central Kentucky, renowned for its extensive cave network within a mature, mixed hardwood forest ecosystem. The preserve is centered around Goat Cave, a significant geological feature formed through the dissolution of limestone bedrock typical of karst topography. This karst system supports a variety of subterranean species and has helped conserve important bat populations, including several endangered species. Above ground, the preserve’s forested landscape offers habitat for typical Appalachian wildlife such as white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and many songbird species. The property was acquired to protect the unique cave system and preserve the fragile karst environment from disturbance. Visitors to the preserve can enjoy hiking along designated trails that traverse ridge tops and forest slopes, with opportunities to observe cave entrances, gnarly outcrops of limestone, and diverse plant life. While exploring the caves by trained cavers is possible under permit, the preserve primarily focuses on surface conservation and passive recreation to protect sensitive subterranean habitats.
